Surrogacy Screening Process
Surrogate Screening Process
Choosing to become a surrogate is a big decision. By carrying a child for someone, you will give another family a life-changing gift. At Pinnacle Surrogacy, we conduct a thorough physical and psychological evaluation on each candidate who meets our surrogate qualifications, to ensure that each baby can develop in a safe and healthy environment. Read on to learn about our surrogate screening process.
How long does it take to become a surrogate?
It takes about 8 weeks to screen to become a Surrogate, depending on where you are currently at in your cycle. Once fully medically and psychologically cleared for surrogacy, we’ll match you with Intended Parent(s) and plan your surrogacy journey.
Online surrogate application
The first step you will take towards becoming a surrogate with us is filling out our online surrogate application. We will use the online surrogate application to ensure that you meet our basic surrogate qualifications. The application is available on our website, and it only takes a couple of minutes to complete.
Background check
We run a background check on each surrogate candidate and partner/spouse. We must verify your identity and check your criminal record before moving forward with your screening.
A clean background check provides the intended parent(s) with peace of mind. While we accept surrogates with minor infractions like speeding or parking tickets, we cannot work with women who are felons or who have a violent past. This policy is common to almost all surrogacy agencies.
However, we understand that every person’s situation is unique. If you wish to discuss your particular circumstances, please contact our team.
Medical records review
After we accept your online application and you pass our background check, we will request your medical records from the OB/GYN doctor who supported you during your most recent pregnancy. Fertility specialists at Pinnacle Surrogacy will review your medical records for any complications. While the findings from the review cannot guarantee that you will not have complications in the future, they are a good indicator of your overall reproductive health and your ability to have a healthy pregnancy.
Phone consultation
Being a surrogate is a very personal journey, and it is crucial that our team establishes excellent communication with you from the beginning of the surrogacy process. A phone consultation is our first opportunity to talk with you and to learn more about your story. The phone consultation is also an opportunity for you to talk directly with one of our doctors and to ask any questions that you might have about becoming a surrogate. It a two-way conversation. We want you to speak openly and honestly so that we can offer you the best support.
Medical screening
The surrogate medical screening process includes a urine test and a blood test to check for any drug use, infectious diseases, or abnormalities. We will also test your partner for drug use and infectious diseases. Next, we will perform a physical exam and an ultrasound to assess your uterus and ovaries. Finally, you will meet with a high-risk obstetrician for your final medical clearance.
Perinatal screening
You will meet with a maternal fetal medicine specialist to complete a full review of your medical history and prenatal/delivery records. The specialist will discuss risks for you or a potential baby you may carry.
Psychological screening
Becoming a surrogate is a major decision. Providing someone with the gift of a child can be emotionally challenging and medically strenuous. Before becoming a surrogate, you will speak with a licensed psychologist to ensure that you are mentally fit to go through a surrogacy journey. We will also check that you have a sound support system and that you know who to call if you need additional support.
Home visit
After we assess your physical and mental health, we schedule a home assessment so that we can meet your family. We want to ensure that you are living in a safe, nurturing, and healthy environment with supportive people around you. The home assessment is another way for us to get to know you as a person. It’s also an opportunity for your family to talk with a member of our team and ask any questions they might have regarding surrogacy.
